Montage

Be warned, that my montage exercise did not work out as well as I planned. I think I'm going to have to spend some real time trying to use the technique properly, and constantly look at hints! The photos were planned and worked out okay, BUT the editing process seemed to fail me. There is gaps and places in the photo where the exposure was brighter compared to my base photo etc!. Hopefully I will be able to do another photo. Which will be my re-attempt . I tired uploading my edited image but it seems the Blogger doesn't even like it !

Photography :the begining

I was researching last night and found some interesting information on Photography during the initial stages my notes are below:

- Sir John Herschel in 1839 labelled ' Photography' it was also the year photography came public.

- The word is derived from the Greek words light and written. ( I found it interesting that it was written, as words arent the focal point of photography it is the image , a commuication of an idea/theme etc. So I researched more and found that it wasnt the word written instead it wa drawing. So a drawing with light? I will need to do some more research to confirm this. )

- Imaginary tale: A prediction made by De La Roche (1729-1774) working on Graphantie. ( Surprisingly I couldnt find what this method or medium actually was). The tale was that it was possible to capture an image using a sticky substance on canvas. Apparently it would create a mirror image when dired in the dark would stick to the canvas. " The author would not have known how prophetic this talke would be, only a few decades after his death."

- There are two specific processes that make photography possible: Optical and Chemical.

- At the begining of the nineteenth centry Thomas Wedgewood was conducting experiments , sucessfully captured images, but they could not survive. There was no known method of making the image permanet.

- The first succesful picture was produced in June/July 1827 by Niepce by using a mterial that hardened on exposure to light. But took an exposure of eight hours.

Week Three

I was ment to post my photos from week 2 but I havent placed them on the PC portion of my hard drive so keep looking , I'll post them soon. I was quite happy with my photos this week and it really was a good day to go for a shoot. I shot in both RAW & JPG. When I really sould have just used RAW . oopps. But even saying that two photos turned out quite well ( out of the 30 i took..) So ill put them up. Im still a little uncertain on my theme for my creative works assessment. I was thinking of appropriating in a sense.. works of famous photography artists throughout time to depict the history of photography as well as show off some skills, but I am still in the brainstorming phase.

Welcome

I am facing new challenges by uploading/writing my journal on the Internet, embracing the ' Digital' realm. A visual diary is within my comfort zone but I am following the trend, keeping up with the times, stepping out of the comfort zone.

It is the second week of DFAP and I am still undecided on a topic of exploration. Many ideas that are floating around are:

- Architecture
- Portraiture
- Melbourne
- Simplicity, Design and Line.

Usually I undertake more than I can handle within an art unit. But undertaking four major themes and combining them to make one could work when using Photography. Except for Portraiture as it seems to stick out from the rest of my list. Hopefully I will be able to decide on something soon. I intend to pick up the camera take some warm up shots and hopefully my theme will become highlighted within the photos taken.

Week 1: The Genius of Photography ( Video ABC)

I found this video quite interesting, especially the artists featured. Some interesting notes I took are below , On the history of Photography and also artists featured beginning in the 1920s .

- The camera was viewed as a machine.

-The 1920s could be seen as a central element in time as holding a camera could be thought as holding the future.

- Failure to understand photography meant that you were seen as the illiterate of the future.

- Donovan Wylie : " You'll only get to know something if you can compare it to something else" ( Wylie photographed towers at eye level to see the complete scale, wanting to produce pure documents, facts and nothing else.)

- Alexander K : " declared painting to be dead; a dead art form ", " The camera is the tool of the new artist" . During this time the camera and its artists/ photographers were serving a large political population.

- Compact light weight hand held cameras proposed freedom and to be free from the tripod this one step made the camera revolutionary due to the fact of beginning the process to eradicate ' Belly Button Photography'. The new style of the camera also gave artists more room to be creative within photography it gave them a chance to change the perspective and perception of an object. Photography can be mailable/manipulated.

-Eugene Atget:
-The Monet comparison
-Looking at the boarder line of one reality to another ( dadaism/surrealism imprinting objects onto photo paper ), pushed into the deep reality of the unreal ( unconscious mind) .

- 1926 Surrealist/makers of document meet.

- 1929 Great year for photography/film , Britain was asleep during this time. The main action and upbringing on photography was in Russia and Germany.

Week 2: 'The shoot'

This week we learnt about the Cannon 1000D. I found the technical aspects easy to understand from previous experience, but when I went outside to take my photos ( during the shoot) I forgot to change the settings for different conditions. So I would take a shot with the specifications for the last shot and then remember to change and then take another. Which I don't think is that efficient nor effective.

In the next two posts I will post photos from week 2 and also some photos in my collection that I have taken over the years.

Enjoy!
Regards Reanna.
